Bengali (Hindu) Holocaust-1

1) কিছু শব্দার্থ (some word meanings)

1a) secularism = (i)Not connected with religious or spiritual matters; (ii)of or denoting slow changes in the motion of the sun or planets; (iii)occurring once every century or similarly long period.

1b) pseudo-secularism = In the Indian context, it describes the policies that involve minority appeasement. The Hindus form the majority religious community in India; the term "pseudo-secular" implies that those who claim to be secular are actually not so, but are anti-Hindu or pro-minority. Examples: The state policies of independent India accorded special rights to Muslims in matters of personal law - (i)allowing triple talaq, (ii)allowing polygamy, (iii)denying a Muslim woman (Shah Bano Begum) alimony after divorce even after winning a court case, (iv)giving Haj Subsidy and taxpayer funded arrangements to Indian Muslim Haj pilgrims (since 2008, over 120,000 Indian Muslims every year make use of this subsidy @Rs.76,223/pilgrim), and (v)being the first country to ban the book "Satanic Verses" by Salman Rushdie in 1989.

[তথাগত রায়, দেশ, 2 April 2015, চিঠিপত্র, পৃঃ৭৩; "Against the Current", 5 March 2015, contents outside double quotes are mine]

2a) holocaust = (i)a great or complete devastation or destruction, especially by fire; (ii)a sacrifice completely consumed by fire; burnt offering; (iii)any mass slaughter or reckless destruction of life.

2b) Holocaust = The systematic mass slaughter of some six million European Jews by the Nazis during World War II. To the Nazis, the Holocaust was the “Final Solution” to the “Jewish problem,” and would help them establish a pure German master race

According to R.J. Rummel, professor of Political Science at the University of Hawaii,
“The genocide and gendercidal atrocities were also perpetrated by lower-ranking officers and ordinary soldiers. These "willing executioners" were fueled by an abiding anti-Bengali racism, especially against the Hindu minority. "Bengalis were often compared with monkeys and chickens. Said General Niazi, 'It was a low lying land of low lying people.' The Hindus among the Bengalis were as Jews to the Nazis: scum and vermin that [should] best be exterminated. As to the Moslem Bengalis, they were to live only on the sufferance of the soldiers: any infraction, any suspicion cast on them, any need for reprisal, could mean their death. And the soldiers were free to kill at will. The journalist Dan Coggin quoted one Pakistani captain as telling him, "We can kill anyone for anything. We are accountable to no one." This is the arrogance of Power. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_Bangladesh_genocide]

3agenocide = Systematic destruction of all or a significant part of a racial, ethnic, religious or national group. ExamplesBangladesh Genocide Archive.

3b) Genocidal rape = Actions of a group who have carried out acts of mass rape during wartime against their perceived enemy as part of a genocidal campaign. Examples: Nanking Rape by Japanese in WW-II, Yugoslav Wars, the Rwandan genocide and the Bangladesh liberation war. Although war rape has been a recurrent feature in conflicts throughout history, it has usually been looked upon as a by-product of conflict, and not an integral part of military policy.

On 19 December 1937, the Reverend James M. McCallum wrote in his diary:
"I know not where to end. Never I have heard or read such brutality. Rape! Rape! Rape! We estimate at least 1,000 cases a night, and many by day. In case of resistance or anything that seems like disapproval, there is a bayonet stab or a bullet ... People are hysterical ... Women are being carried off every morning, afternoon and evening. The whole Japanese army seems to be free to go and come as it pleases, and to do whatever it pleases." [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre]

4) pogromIt is a violent riot aimed at massacre or persecution of an ethnic or religious group, particularly one aimed at Jews. The word is now also sometimes used to describe publicly sanctioned purgative attacks against non-Jewish ethnic or religious groups.

5a) intellicideDeath of information, e.g. destruction of Nalanda University, a famous ancient seat of Buddhist learning, by Bakhtiyar Khilji in c. 1200 CE.

"...thousands of monks were burned alive and thousands beheaded as Khilji tried his best to uproot Buddhism. The burning of the library continued for several months and "smoke from the burning manuscripts hung for days like a dark pall over the low hills." [Minhaj-i-Siraj in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_bin_Bakhtiyar_Khilji]

Irony - Bakhtiyarpur, a city in the state of Bihar, India is named after Bakhtiyar Khilji, who was military general of Qutb-ud- din Aybak and destroyer of Nalanda University. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakhtiarpur]

5b) intellectual-cide (বুদ্ধিজীবি হত্যা) = Systematic execution of intellectuals - professors, journalists, doctors, artists, engineers (1971, Bangladesh Liberation War, Vietnam War), meritorious students (1971, Naxal Movement), bloggers (ongoing in Bangladesh). Motive : to eliminate future leaders, to destroy possible hosts of nascent dissenting ideas, to terrorise intellectuals into submission/silence. {The word is coined by me, it is not in the dictionary. 'Intellicide' should encompass this meaning too.}

Suppression of 1971, Naxal Movement in West Bengal, India :-
"The house of the Congress MLA of Sealdah, was allegedly turned into a torture chamber where Naxals were incarcerated illegally by police and the Congress cadres. CPI-M cadres were also involved in the "state terror". [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naxalite]

Frontier on September 18, 1971:
“More than 150 boys were butchered within two days (12th and 13th August in 1971) – the Friday and Saturday. Others who were not young had also to die. Lest there be any mistake, a list containing the names of the boys killed was hung up on an improvised scaffolding on Kutighat Road, the main road connecting the Baranagar police station with the other parts. There were hour-to-hour additions to the list, and the list covered only a part of the whole area of operations. The list ran to more than 60 names on Friday alone, and enlisting the dead was discontinued as the dead were lost count of.”

6) refugee = People who are forced to migrate outside their home country (involuntary emigrants, pushed out) because they have suffered (or feared) persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, or political opinion. One of the world's most long drawn (still ongoing) migration, involves the East Bengali refugees. A majority of these refugees are Hindus. It is different from voluntary immigration where people seek greener pastures (pulled in to a foreign country usually due to economic reasons).

7) Razakar/Rajakar = Literally means "volunteer". Militia organized by ruling Muslim leaders in India, East Pakistan to exterminate Hindus and moderate/educated Muslims to either resist integration to India (Hyderabad) or to force integration with Pakistan (Calcutta Riots, 1946) or to prevent disintegration of Pakistan (Bangladesh, 1971).

8a) Zombie = They are fictional undead creatures, typically depicted as mindless, reanimated human corpses with a hunger for human flesh/blood/brain (as in Plants vs Zombies game). Modern depictions of zombies involve virus instead of magic (as in Resident Evil movie series).
Zombie - the next step of our evolution ?

8b) Zombie = In computer science, a zombie is a computer connected to the Internet that has been compromised by a hacker, computer virus or trojan horse and can be used to perform malicious tasks of one sort or another under remote direction. Botnets of zombie computers are often used to spread e-mail spam and launch denial-of-service attacks. Most owners of zombie computers are unaware that their system is being used in this way. Because the owner tends to be unaware, these computers are metaphorically compared to zombies.

8c) Zombie = A cocktail consisting of several kinds of rum, liqueur, and fruit juice.

Striking Historical Similarities (only Place-Time-Person varied)

Nazi/Japanese = Punjabi Muslims of undivided Pakistan (aided by Bihari Muslims & some Bengali speaking Muslims)

2.3) Hitler's Final Solution of Jewish Problem = Yahya Khan's Operation Searchlight for annihilation of Bengalis (Hindus)

Hitler's myth of Aryan superiority was shattered and an independent nation of Jews, "Israel" was born.

Jinnah's "Two Nation Theory", the very foundation of Pakistan collapsed and an independent nation "Bangladesh" was carved out from the 'holy/pure/clean land' of Pakistan.

3) Pakistan - the failed nation !

So, what we perceive today as "Pakistan" is a blood-soaked, stinking corpse of a fictitious nationality, a monumental historical blunder, drifting in the whirlpool of communal blood of Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Bengalis, Biharis, Beluchis, Sindhis, Waziris ... This blood is being spilled unabated from its day of formation to date. Every single day of its ghostly existence, since the birth of Bangladesh, is an anomaly which mocks the Pakistani identity of its inhabitants.

"... I am one of Salman Rushdie’s many Midnight’s Children: we were snatched from the cradle of a great civilization and made permanent refugees, sent in search of an oasis that turned out to be a mirage. I am in pain, a living witness to how dreams of hope and enlightenment can be turned into a nightmare of despair and failure. Promises made to the children of my generation that were never meant to be kept." [Tarek Fatah, author of Chasing a Mirage* in "About Me"]

* "In 2008, I experienced the wrath of Indian self-censorship when another publisher backed out of a contract to publish my book Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State, citing fear of Muslims being offended. It was a shock to me. The irony is that the same book was published in Islamic Pakistan, right next door."  [Tarek Fatah in an article on withdrawal of the book The Hindus: An Alternative History from India]

"If we have any hopes of saving Pakistan, we have to let go of the idea of Pakistan. Neither the sub-continent, nor the world needs a separate homeland for Muslims. We need a country where people can live freely regardless of their creed, caste, religion or political affiliation." [Shehzad Ghias Shaikh, Apr 11, 2015]

4) Two Nation Theory:

The theory asserted that Indian Hindus and Indian Muslims were each a nation. It said that the concept of nation in the East was different from that in the West. In the East, religion was "a complete social order which affects all the activities in life" and "where the allegiance of people is divided on the basis of religion, the idea of territorial nationalism has never succeeded."

It asserted that "a Muslim of one country has far more sympathies with a Muslim living in another country than with a non-Muslim living in the same country."

Muhammad Iqbal had also championed the notion of pan-Islamic nationhood and strongly condemned the concept of a territory-based nation as anti-Islamic.

The theory has been facing scepticism because (i)Muslims did not entirely separate from Hindus and about one-third of all Muslims continued to live in post-partition India as Indian citizens alongside a much larger Hindu majority. (ii)The subsequent partition of Pakistan itself into the present-day nations of Pakistan and Bangladesh was cited as proof both that Muslims did not constitute one nation and that religion was not a defining factor for nationhood.

[Dainik Samayik Prasanga]
